Description

These homemade cheese crackers are crisp, buttery, and packed with rich cheddar flavor. Easy to make with simple ingredients, they bake to a perfect golden crunch. Enjoy them as a snack, with dips, or on a cheese board for a delicious, savory treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Cracker Dough:

  • 1 cup (120g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ¼ cup (30g) Parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • ¾ cup (90g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons ice-cold water

Optional Toppings:

  • Extra shredded cheddar or Parmesan
  • Smoked paprika or cayenne for heat
  • Sesame seeds or coarse salt for added texture

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. In a food processor or mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sea salt, and garlic powder (if using). Pulse or whisk until evenly mixed.
  2. Add shredded cheddar, grated Parmesan, and cubed butter. Pulse until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  3. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough holds together when pinched. Avoid overmixing.

Step 2: Shape the Crackers

  1. Form the dough into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to approximately ⅛-inch thick.
  3. Cut into squares, rectangles, or desired shapes using a sharp knife or cookie cutter.
  4. If desired, sprinkle extra cheese, paprika, or sesame seeds on top for additional flavor.

Step 3: Bake Until Golden

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Arrange crackers on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each piece.
  3. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the crackers are golden and crispy.
  4. Let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For Extra Crispy Crackers: Roll the dough as thin as possible and bake for an additional 1–2 minutes.
  • Cheese Variations: Try Gouda, Gruyère, or a spicy pepper jack for different flavor profiles.
  • Storage: Keep crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. To restore crispness, reheat at 300°F (150°C) for a few minutes.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend instead of all-purpose flour.
  • Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of cayenne or red pepper flakes to the dough for a bit of heat.
